Suicides in Army

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Fall in number of suicides by defence personnel’ DE March 19.
It is quite reassuring that the number of suicides by defence personnel has come down due to a number of measures undertaken by the Government in this regard.
It is duty of the nation to look after the welfare of army personnel who work in stressful conditions.
Army personnel who are working in remotest areas bordering the nation are human beings and their emotions have to be taken care of. They should be free to talk back to their superiors and to take their feed back is very important. Formal rules to imbibe discipline do not always work and sometimes prove to be counterproductive.
So the best logic is to give a human touch to this issue. Leave rules need a relook and have to be rationalised. A high level committee of the top brass should be in place to discuss this important issue which may encompass all the emotional, psychological and security aspects.
Yours etc….
