JAMMU, Feb 19: Sikh United Front, J&K has strongly condemned the attitude of United States of America authorities towards the `turban’ of Sikh people deported to India.
In a meeting of the Front which was attended by several other organizations, its Chairman, S S Wazir said that Sikhs all over the world should raise their voice against the undignified attitude towards the turban (A symbol of Sikhism), by the US authorities.
Wazir strongly condemned the US authorities for allegedly sending Sikh deportees without turbans. He said that it is a matter of regret that deportees were brought in shackles and Sikh deportees were not allowed to wear their turbans. The deportee also claimed that they were handcuffed with their legs chained during the journey.
Drawing a parallel with the collective Sikh response to France’s turban ban, Wazir reminded the community that the fight for the `Dastar’ has always been a global one. When France banned the turban in schools and official documents at that time Sikhs stood together.
He questions when Sikh deportees were humiliated by US at that time why we all were silent. Wazir also raised a question that where are the Sikh MPs, Ministers, and activists who never hesitate to speak on Sikh issues in India. Their silence is intriguing, we appeal that they should use their influence to make America realise the importance of the Sikh religion which has served people in distress all over the world.
They reminded them about their deep-rooted belief in Sewa (selfless service), often providing food, shelter and support to other people and communities all over the world, where ever is the need.
Wazir said it is surprising that Gurpatwant Singh Pannu who claims to be an ideologue of Khalistan is silent on this issue. “Such kind of persons are not to be trusted by Sikhs at all. Such people always talk about religion, but when their stand is needed for Sikh community, at that time they maintain criminal silence,” Wazir remarked.
SUF leader appealed to the Prime Minister Modi requesting him to use his personal influence and asked US President Donald Trump to respect the sentiments of Sikh community. America should learn to respect the human rights of all the people. Many Sikh leaders attended the meeting.
