Such things can’t be done here, Akhtar on DPS Hijab incident

SRINAGAR : Reacting to reports that a teacher was forced to resign by a public school for wearing ‘Abbaya’ (Hijab) in Srinagar, Education Minister Naeem Akhtar said such things cannot be done here as India is a multi-religious country and everyone has a right to follow his or her beliefs.
Responding to a question by Independent MLA Er Abdul Rashid after the Question Hour was over in the Legislative Assembly, the Minister said, “We don’t live in France where such things are done. We live in India which is a multi-religious country and everyone has a right under the law to practice his or her faith.”
“Delhi Public School (DPS) is a private school, but we will get in touch with the school administration and inquire about the facts. They will be conveyed that such things can’t be done in this country, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Er Rashid had raised this issue stating that students from DPS located at Athawajan in Srinagar staged a protest inside the school premises yesterday demanding that the teacher, who was forced to resign for wearing Abaya, be reinstated. (AGENCIES)
