Students in confusion

Sir,
This refers to the writeup’Students in confusion’ ‘(DE, Dec 6, 2014).The students are, undoubtedly, the greatest asset of a country as it is they who will have to shoulder the onerous responsibilty of running their country in the years to come.So it is imperative that they are provided best education with ample opportunities to hone up their skills and blossom their talents and abilities. But is sad that students are not motivated properly to channelise their energy and talent in a proper manner. They are in a state of confusion and uncertainty. They don’t have such skills as may help them to get jobs. They may be holding degrees which don’t stand them in good stead when it comes to get a job.In order to face the challenges of the fast changing world, our students need to be imparted education of global standards. They may be encouraged to spend sufficient time in libraries and laboratories and thus get knowledge in a natural and pragmatic manner. The students too need to cultivate and develop a culture for extensive reading and real learning. The students, especially studying in remote and farflung areas, ought to make the optimum use of their time and energy to be able compete with their counterparts studying in prestigious schools in metropolitan cities.
It is strange that even after spending so many precious years in schools and colleges, most of our graduates are ill equipped with the necessary skills of speaking, reading and writing with the result that they find it difficult to get employment. Thus the government, the planners and academicians ought to sit together to devise and implement such a system of education as helps them to improve their communication and interpersonal skills, develop confidence in themselves, inspire and motivate them to get knowledge, improve their skills and thus get gainful employment. The students, on their part, need to realize the importance of education and should not waste time by indulging themselves in disruptive activities and futile pursuits such as strikes, bandhs, taking part in politics etc.The teachers and the parents too ought to act as role models and provide proper guidance to the students so that they are not led astray by the negative forces.
Yours truly…..
