STs Deptt imposes Rs 2.55 crore in penalties under GST violations

JAMMU, Feb 16: The Enforcement Wing of State Taxes (STs) Department today collected Rs 2.55 crore in penalties during its ongoing crackdown under GST violations.
The crackdown, which took place in the 2024-25 financial year was focused on high-tax commodities including metal scrap, cement, granite, TMT bars and tobacco.
In this regard the team lead by Deputy Commissioner Sonu Pargal and under the supervision of Commissioner of State Taxes, P K Bhat and Additional Commissioner, Namrita Dogra carried out a thorough verification of over 2.50 lakh e-way bills.
This extensive operation led to a noticeable improvement in taxpayer and transporter compliance with GST regulations.
Penalties were imposed for a variety of violations, including the movement of goods without proper e-way bills, incorrect tax rate declarations, quantity mismatches and the use of fake GSTINs.
Among the goods involved in the penalties were Iron goods/TMT Bars (Rs 43 lakh), Cement (Rs 6 lakh), tobacco/cigarettes/pan masala (Rs 12 lakh) and mobile phones/accessories (Rs 2 lakh).
The operation was carried out with the collaborative efforts of Senior Tax Officers (STOs) Romi Jamwal, Naresh Koul, Sudhir Sharma, Sunil Gupta and Ashwani Kumar, who successfully dismantled a network of habitual violators.
While penalizing violators, the team also recognized the cooperation of compliant dealers and drivers who adhered to the GST Act.
Notably, penalties were also enforced in the far-flung areas of Jammu district, including Khour, Dasgal (Akhnoor) and Arnia, demonstrating the department’s commitment to reaching every corner of the region.
This crackdown was a part of the ongoing efforts of the Enforcement Wing to combat tax evasion, raise awareness about GST compliance and promote transparency in the tax system.
