Public Distribution System in the State has not escaped earning public criticism of its functioning including corruption and mismanagement at various levels. It appears the Minister in charge of Consumer Affairs, Public Distribution and Transport Departments wants to react to the criticism. Consequently his initiative of bringing in some reforms in accountability sector of these departments is in the news. He has asked his departmental echelons in both the regions to constitute Vigilance Wings and Flying Squads to monitor the functioning of the PDS and Transport. The focus seems to be on conducting extensive scrutiny of ration cards and find out the fake ones among these. Ration distribution has been scandalized and many allegations are made of nexus between the dealers and suppliers. But everybody knows that the nexus of this type is always deep rooted and multi-layered. We hope that the Vigilance Wing will be able to make meaningful headway towards the objective for which these will be created and the teams should be led by really honest and dedicated staff.
