The proposed Paddar-Zanskar road marks a transformative step in enhancing connectivity, bolstering national security, and driving socio-economic growth in the strategically significant regions of Jammu and Ladakh. The ambitious project promises to establish an all-weather road link that will not only reduce geographical isolation but also foster cultural and economic integration. Currently, Ladakh is linked to Jammu via the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which remains closed for several months during winter due to heavy snowfall. The alternative route through Manali is also seasonal. The Paddar-Zanskar road, coupled with the Zojila tunnel, has the potential to provide year-round connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted movement of goods, people, and security forces.
Two potential routes for the project have been identified: a 45-kilometre stretch via Kishtwar-Atholi-Machhil-Soomchan-Zongkhulm and an 80-kilometre route through Kishtwar-Atholi-Dangail-Pot La-Bardhan/Haftal. Both alignments will directly link Ladakh to Jammu, significantly shortening travel time and easing logistical challenges. Additionally, an 8-kilometre tunnel from Lossani to Dangail has been proposed, which will further enhance the project’s feasibility and cost-effectiveness. With India’s borders with China and Pakistan in close proximity, maintaining robust infrastructure for troop movement is critical. The road will serve as a vital artery for the smooth mobilisation of forces, addressing the current challenges posed by seasonal closures of existing routes. The enhanced infrastructure will strengthen the defensive posture along the LAC and the LoC, thereby safeguarding national sovereignty. Beyond its strategic utility, this connectivity will unlock untapped economic potential, enabling local communities to thrive. It will also help preserve and promote the cultural and historical ties between Jammu, Ladakh, and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, fostering a sense of unity and shared identity. Furthermore, the road’s design will circumvent areas vulnerable to anti-national activities, ensuring safer travel. This enhanced security will encourage investment and development in the region, paving the way for long-term growth and stability. As the project advances through its planning stages, it is imperative to ensure timely execution, environmental sustainability, and community involvement to maximise its impact. This road, once completed, will bridge opportunities, aspirations, and ambitions.
