Stop this shame

Sir,
The alleged brutal rape of a twenty seven year old woman executive by thirty two year old cab driver, who is stated to be a rape offender against whom many cases have already been registered, has brought back the memories of December16, 2012 when the Delhi braveheart was brutally gangraped and assaulted leading to her shocking death. The horrific crime had sparked nationwide protests and the Government constituted JS Verma Commission to propose amendments to laws related to crime against women. The rape of the woman by the cabbie has once again exposed how vulnerable women are to such heinous crimes despite the existence of tough anti rape laws and how audacious the criminals are.The fact that the mother of the rape accused has demanded strict punishment for her son, speaks volume about the brutality of the crime commited by him.The Government has prohibited the US based taxi booking service Uber from operating the cab service in the capital. But only banning the cab service is not the solution to such crimes against women. What is required is the proper verification of the Driving Licence and character and antecedents of the drivers before recruiting them and close liasion between the Transport Department and law enforcement agencies.
Moreover, we also need to change our mindset for the women and for this purpose, it is imperative that refresher and orientation courses for the drivers are periodically organised by the trannsport authorities,in which they should be imparted moral education and also aquainted with the main provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.Last but not least, there is need to strictly enforce laws related to crimes against women and constitute fast track courts for speedy trial of such crimes and exemplary punishment for such inhuman and barbaric crimes so that women can experience a sense of security and can live a safe and fearless life.
Yours etc….
