Sir,
The gangrape and death of two minor Dalit girls in Badaun district of U.P.has sent the whole nation into a state of shock and anger.Almost everyday, the newspapers are full of reports of women and girls being brutalised, molested and raped. Despite the existence of constitutional safeguards and strict laws enacted by the Government to prevent crime against the fair sex, there has been little decline in such gruesome acts against women and girls. It seems the perpetrators of such heinous acts are least afraid of the law of the land.As such, there is need to enact stricter laws and establish more fast track courts to deal with such cases.Fast and speedy trial of such cases so that the culprits are awarded exemplary sentence in the shortest possible time will prove to be a strong deterrent to such crime. The poor girls are reported to be hailing from landless families, who didnot have access to private toilet facility and the girls had reportedly gone to relieve themselves in the open fields early in the morning, when they were abducted and crime commited on them.Presumably,if they had had the toilet facility at their home, they would not have met such a fate.
Therefore, this horrific incident has highlighted the need for providing more toilets to end the practice of open defecation and thus protect the women from the risk of being exposed to harassment and assault by the unscruplous elements of the society. The Government needs to take measures to provide lavatory and toilet facility to every household on a war footing.Where it is not possible to do so,community toilets in sufficient numbers be constructed to cater to the need of a cluster of households in particular areas. Moreover, people must change their mindset towards womenfolk and jettison off misogynistic culture. We must learn to respect women and educate people starting at the school level about respect for women.Only then our women -who are our mothers, sisters, daughters etc can live a safe and dignified life and regain the respect and dignity they enjoyed in the olden times.
Yours etc……
