JAMMU, Dec 20: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Kumar today granted 15 days time to the Jammu Municipal Corporation for stopping dumping of solid waste at Bhagwati Nagar and in Tawi and making use of landfill site identified at Kot Bhalwal.
When the PIL titled Rajinder Singh Jamwal Versus State of J&K came up for hearing, Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development Department, who was present in the court, submitted that the sanitary land fill site has been identified at Kot Bhalwal and the land has also been acquired to the extent of 156 kanals. “The land fill shall be developed strictly in terms of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 under the Environment Protection Act, 1986”, he added.
Considering the request of the Commissioner Secretary, the DB granted 15 days time for bringing an end to the practice of dumping of solid waste at Bhagwati Nagar near River Tawi. “Solid waste should be taken to the land fill site at Kot Bhalwal that too strictly in terms of Solid Waste Management Rules”, the DB added.
The Division Bench also directed the district administration as well as the police to fully cooperate with the Jammu Municipal Corporation so that the land fill site at Kot Bhalwal is used without any hindrance.
The Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development Department was also directed to submit time line within which actions under Solid Waste Management Rules would be taken.
Regarding bio-medical waste, Division Bench directed the Commissioner Secretary Health, who was also present in the court, to indicate the exact plan of action.
