SRINAGAR, Feb 23: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) today said that the distribution of modified modern steel looms will revitalize Kashmir’s carpet sector.
In a statement issued here, the KCCI stated that the distribution of these modern looms is a significant step toward enhancing the working environment for weavers, which is crucial for improving their productivity and the overall quality of their craft.
“While the distribution of 100 looms is a progressive step, it is imperative that this initiative be expanded after evaluating the effectiveness of the looms and confirming that they meet the expected standards for which they are designed,” KCCI said.
The trade body commended the Government, the Industries and Commerce Department, the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, and its Director, Zubair Ahmad, for recognizing the pressing needs of the artisan community.
Historically, the KCCI said, the carpet weaving industry has been a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy, providing livelihoods to thousands of artisans and their families.
“However, traditional looms often present challenges, including limited mobility and less ergonomic design, which can hinder weavers’ efficiency and comfort,” it said, adding that the introduction of modified modern steel carpet looms is expected to address these issues effectively.
KCCI said that it believes that embracing modern technology is essential to elevating the standards of craftsmanship and empowering artisans.
“By facilitating access to effective tools and resources, we aim to ensure that the skills of our weavers are complemented by the latest advancements in weaving technology.”
