Statehood must for running J&K ‘under one command’: Advisor

SRINAGAR, Apr 12: Advisor to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, today said that restoring Statehood is essential for running Jammu and Kashmir “under one command” and for bringing about a meaningful change in the overall situation.
Speaking to reporters here, Nasir remarked that the situation in J&K will not improve merely through rhetoric, as the BJP tends to do.
“We have consistently maintained that the demand for Statehood is not for personal gain, but for normalization and to bring J&K under a unified command,” he said.
Responding to allegations of “failure” levelled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said that as the opposition, it is their role to criticize the Government.
“However,” he added, “such criticism should not be baseless or just for the sake of it.”
“Change will only come through action on the ground. The Lieutenant Governor, who heads the Unified Command, must ensure that the forces are further alerted to prevent such incidents,” he said.
Nasir noted that the ground situation is different, with frequent encounters and the loss of lives.
“Even today, a life was lost. The BJP is disconnected from the reality on the ground. When they were in Government with the PDP, they were in a deep slumber-and even today, they remain unaware,” he said, referring to the ongoing encounters in J&K.
He stated that meaningful improvement in the security scenario can only be achieved through complete control.
“Otherwise, what we are witnessing now is deeply concerning. There needs to be tight control over the situation in J&K.”
On the Waqf Bill, he said the National Conference has approached the Supreme Court.
“We will fight it there, because there’s little else we can do. It is the Apex Court of the country,” he said.
Regarding the US-imposed tariffs and their potential impact on J&K, the Advisor said they will affect horticulture and other sectors, and the issue demands immediate attention.
