JAMMU, Dec 7: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Jammu, Girdhari Lal Sharma, visited Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch districts to assess and improve traffic management, especially in light of ongoing construction projects.
The visit aimed to ensure smooth vehicular movement on the National Highway (NHW) between Lakhanpur and Bari Brahmana, where extensive roadwork is underway.
In Kathua, the SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, Girdhari Lal Sharma held an interactive session with local traffic police personnel to address traffic challenges exacerbated by the NHW construction.
He stressed the importance of strict enforcement of traffic rules to minimize disruptions and ensure safety on the roads.
Officers were directed to monitor traffic closely and work in coordination with local authorities, including the District Administration, District Police, and NHAI.
Emphasis was placed on reducing accidents, particularly at construction zones and bottlenecks.
Sharma also highlighted the importance of cooperation from Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators and the general public in adhering to traffic regulations.
He insisted that officers be proactive in enforcing traffic laws, ensuring that traffic violations such as overloading, improper parking, and violations related to High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are promptly addressed.
In Rajouri and Poonch, the traffic situation was reviewed amidst ongoing road widening projects and the recent reopening of the Mughal Road.
The additional traffic from the reopening of this route, coupled with the upcoming Shri Amarnath Yatra (scheduled to begin on July 1, 2023), was creating congestion.
Sharma underscored the need for local police to support traffic management due to a shortage of traffic personnel, particularly in these hilly regions.
During the meetings, Sharma gave clear directives to improve traffic regulation and enforcement.
He emphasized that traffic officers should focus on reducing visible traffic violations such as overloaded vehicles, illegal parking, and unsafe driving practices.
He also ensured that no passengers travel on the roofs of buses or other vehicles, urging officers to enforce this strictly.
Traffic officers were advised to maintain punctuality and professionalism while carrying out their duties.
The SSP stressed that all officers should remain accountable for their performance, which would reflect in their annual performance reviews.
Additionally, officers were instructed to ensure smooth traffic flow during special events such as the Shri Budha Amarnath Yatra, which requires heightened vigilance.
Concluding his visit, Sharma promised that the concerns about fuel support for officers would be addressed at senior levels, ensuring that the necessary resources are available to maintain traffic management across the districts.
