SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar City, Ajaz Ahmed today issued a strong warning to car dealers and shopkeepers, stating that public roads cannot be used for business activities or prolonged parking.
Speaking to reporters, the SSP said traffic police had noticed several car dealers illegally placing vehicles on roads in different parts of the city, contributing to congestion and causing inconvenience to commuters.
He said all such vehicles found parked or displayed on roadways would be towed away and stringent legal action would be initiated against the violators.
Emphasising that roads are meant exclusively for the movement of traffic, he said their misuse for commercial purposes would not be tolerated.
The SSP also cautioned shopkeepers, especially in busy city centre areas, against keeping their vehicles parked outside their shops for the entire day.
He said shop owners must make use of designated parking areas or public transport, adding that occupation of road space for long-duration parking is not permissible. Drawing a distinction between shopkeepers and customers, the SSP said shoppers are allowed to halt briefly to make purchases and then move on.
However, he stressed that shopkeepers are not permitted to block roads or footpaths by parking their vehicles for extended periods.
Responding to concerns raised by the public regarding traffic challans, the SSP clarified that challans are not issued merely on the basis of mobile phone photographs.
He said photographs are used only as supporting evidence, while challans are generated through authorised devices after following the prescribed procedure. In most cases, he added, paper challans are issued on the spot.
