JAMMU, Dec 20: In order to ensure public safety and strengthen internal security, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, launched an online tenant verification web portal named “Kirayedar” here today for the general public.
Addressing media persons after the launch, the SSP Jammu hoped that the portal will significantly help the administration in the tenant reporting and verification so that a safe environment is provided to the citizen especially in view of the increased anti-social and anti-national activities in the region.
He said Jammu, being the winter capital of the UT, witnesses a regular inflow of people from various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during the shifting of the Civil Secretariat. Click here to watch video
“A large number of these people stay in rented accommodation. Besides, several major infrastructure projects are underway in and around Jammu, resulting in the arrival of labourers, contractors and technical staff who also reside in rented premises,” he said, adding that anti-national elements may misuse the situation by obtaining rented accommodations under false identities.
In view of this, tenant verification has been made mandatory, and the Deputy Commissioner has issued orders for compulsory tenant reporting and verification through the police, the police officer said.
However, he said, many landlords, due to old age, job commitments or being out of station, found it difficult to visit police stations for verification of the tenants.
“Reluctance to approach police stations also hampered the verification process,” he accepted.
As a result, 12 FIRs were registered against defaulting landlords, while police conducted over 10,000 tenant verifications, he said.
To overcome these challenges, he said, Jammu and Kashmir Police have developed the “Kirayedar” online portal.
According to the SSP Jammu, the portal has been created with the collaborative efforts of three IIT Jammu students and a local youth from Kathua, under the guidance of SDPO City West Jammu.
“It is user-friendly and allows landlords to submit tenant details anytime and from anywhere,” he said.
The police officer further claimed that landlords can access the portal by typing tenant.jkpverify.in on Google.
“After mobile number verification through OTP, they can fill in tenant details, upload required documents, select the concerned police station and submit the application,” he said, adding that an SMS confirmation with an application ID is sent after successful submission.
