Jammu, Mar 6: An interactive session on promotion of Dogri, the language of the Duggar land, was held between the Senior Citizens SS Club Chowadi, Jammu headed by Dr. Kasturi Lal, Chairman and members of Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu headed by Arun Gupta.
Dr. Kasturi Lal, Chairman of the Sr. Citizens Club gave an overview on the necessity to promote Dogri and use it in our day to day working. He said that even the display boards on the shops should be in the Takri script, the original script used for writing Dogri language in earlier days. This will give visibility to our script and a sense of pride to all the Dogras
Mohan Singh Salathia gave an impressive account of the history of Dogri as to how it was neglected by the Kashmir-centric govts. As a result, the population of Dogra citizens had started decreasing in Jammu after 1947. The locals had to struggle hard for 56 years to get this language included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution in 2003.
Arun Gupta, President CCI, also showed his concern about the non-use of Dogri language in the houses as well as in our day to day working. He assured the Senior Citizen Club that their members would start using Dogri in their day to day working as well as putting Takri display boards in front of their shops.
On a query, Maj Gen SK Sharma, President of Sr. Citizen Club told the gathering that Central University of Jammu had sent a proposal to higher authorities to open a “Centre for Takri Script” in his university. It is likely to get funding before 31st March 2025, if all goes well.
At this occasion, a book titled “Doyens of Dogri Literature”, authored by O.P. Sharma was also released by the dignitaries. This book gives detailed history of all the Sahitya Academi Award awardees in Dogri language since 1970.
