RAMBAN, May 26: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was crushed to death by a speeding vehicle near Shan Palace on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the wee hours today.
As per police sources, 26-year-old SPO Ishtiaq Ahmed, son of late Ali Mohammad, a resident of Kowbagh, district Ramban was run over by a Srinagar-bound taxi (Tavera) bearing registration JK03B-8184 when asked to stop for routine checking at the police cordon near Shan Palace around 1:30 AM.
The profusely bleeding victim was initially rushed to district hospital Ramban and after first aid referred to Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu, but he succumbed to his injuries on way to Jammu at Chenani in Udhampur district.
The driver of the vehicle escaped from the spot but was chased and arrested by the police at Ramsu. The accused driver has been identified as Tausif Ahmed of district Anantnag.
A case in this regard has been registered at Ramban police station and investigation started.
Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremony was held in the native village of the deceased, where SSP Ramban Randeep Kumar along with Additional SP Ramban Mushtaq Choudhary paid tributes to the SPO.
