SRINAGAR, Apr 11: Former Union Minister Prof Saifuddin Soz has expressed concern over the growing scarcity of drinking water in Jammu and Kashmir and urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take immediate and practical measures to address the issue.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Soz said that protests were increasing across several districts due to shortage of potable water and called for urgent Government intervention.
He stressed the need to seriously consider the impact of climate change and sought the Chief Minister’s personal attention in resolving the crisis.
Soz also pointed out that misuse of drinking water by certain sections, including service stations, vegetable growers, washermen and hoteliers, was worsening the situation.
He urged the Government to act before the problem becomes unmanageable and called for effective implementation of the Centre’s rainwater harvesting project in both letter and spirit.
