Son of the soil

J&K State is proud that a son of the soil has climbed the highest pinnacle of judicial structure in the country. Justice Tirath Singh Thakur is the proud son of a late legal luminary and political leader of the State, Devi Das Thakur. Originally hailing from Ramban in erstwhile Doda district of Jammu, Justice Thakur began his legal career as Pleader in October 1972 and joined the chamber of his father. He was designated Senior Advocate in 1990, appointed additional judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court in February 1994 and transferred as a judge of the Karnataka High Court in the following month, acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on April 9, 2008, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court the same year and elevated to the apex court on November 17, 2009. He is the 43rd Chief Justice of India.
He has reached the highest pinnacle of judicial hierarchy. By becoming the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he has brought honour to the entire State and given reason to its residents to be proud of the son of the soil. Though he has only one year of active service left, yet the galaxy of luminaries of the country who had come to attend the searing ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan shows in what great esteem the entire nation and its leadership holds him. It is remarkable in one more aspect. He has been sworn in at a time when there is a controversy between the parliament and the judiciary on the question of appointment of judges to the Supreme Court. The five-member Bench of the Supreme Court has , in their recent verdict, turned down the proposal of the Government of doing away with the Collegium system of making selection of the judges and allowed the old system to continue. Justice Thakur has won a name for the State and we are hopeful that though he has only a short term to be in office, yet he will leave behind indelible impression of his wisdom and vision as far as legal niceties are concerned. We wish him strength to dispense justice in true sense of the term.
