Soldier killed while repairing fence

SRINAGAR, May 8: A soldier slipped to death while he was repairing the anti-infiltration fence along Line of Control in Machil sector of Kupwara district, a defence official said here.
The official said the Sepoy Kishori Lal, a resident of Dhar village of Kishtwar district, slipped and fell into a deep nallah yesterday while he was involved in resuscitating the anti-infiltration fence which was damaged due to the heavy snow fall this year. “The soldier was immediately evacuated by helicopter to Army Base Hospital at Srinagar. However, he succumbed to his injuries,” he said.
The defence official said the speedy resuscitation of the anti-infiltration is undertaken every year soon after snow melts. “This is vital to maintain a robust anti-infiltration posture and prevent infiltration of terrorists through the highly treacherous areas along the Line of Control,” he added.
Sepoy Kishori Lal the Territorial Army last year, said the defence official, adding that born to a family of farmers, he is proudly remembered by his peers for his indomitable spirit, a very high camaraderie quotient, commitment towards duty and thrust of achieving higher goals.
“He was physically tough and was a natural choice to his team to undertake challenging tasks and he proved it last month when he was part of a detachment which repaired a critical portion of the fence in record time,” he said.
Paying tributes to the soldier, the Chinar Corps Commander, Lt Gen Satish Dua saluted the courage and selflessness of Sepoy Kishori Lal whose commitment to work can be gauged from the fact that he volunteered to supervise the work in the most difficult part of the terrain.
“He saluted the bereaved families and offering his condolences for their loss. The General Officer reaffirmed the Army’s commitment towards looking after their honour and well being,” the Defence official added. The body of the solider was flown in an Army helicopter from Srinagar to Kishtwar for cremation at his village with full military honours, said the Defence official.
