Fog continues to hit region

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Light snowfall was recorded in some higher reaches of Kashmir, leading to plummeting temperatures across the region while Jammu’s night temperature is experiencing sharp fall since Monday.
Under the influence of a feeble western disturbance, there was light snowfall in a few areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir and some parts of Jammu region including the Mughal Road, Sinthan Top and the upper areas of Ganderbal, last night and it was snowing tonight in Pirpanjal hills areas of South Kashmir. Several inches of snow had accumulated so far in these hills.
An official from Indian Meteorological Department said there is a possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches of north, south and central Kashmir during the day.
“After that, the weather is likely to remain dry but cloudy till January 20”, the official said.
He said that the temperatures across the region will plummet further till January 10 and after that there is likelihood of a rise in temperatures by 1-2 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was the coldest place in the region at night with a minimum temperature of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius.

The official said the minimum temperatures at most places in Kashmir dipped last night.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, a slight drop from minus 3.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday night.
At the tourist resort of Pahalgam, the mercury settled at a low of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius and Qazigund, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 3.1 degrees Celsius.
However, the day temperatures across the region settled above Zero degree Celsius. Srinagar recorded a maximum of 10.0 degree Celsius, Qazigund 8.6 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 5.6 degree Celsius, Kupwara 11.0 degree Celsius, Kokernag of 5.8 degree Celsius and Gulmarg 1.6 degree Celsius.
The winter capital Jammu today experienced sharp fall in night temperature. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 5.2 deg C against 8.7 deg C on Monday. The maximum temperature, however, remained 15.4 degree C today against 16.2 deg C yesterday, which is about 2.6 degrees below normal for the day.
Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 deg C while maximum temperature was 17.6 deg today. Tourist resort Bhaderwah experienced a night temperature of minus 2.2 deg and maximum 10.5 deg C; Highway township of Banihal registered a minimum temperature of 1.5 deg and maximum 10.9 deg C; Batote a minimum temperature of 1.7 and maximum 10.4 deg C on Tuesday.
Poonch town today recorded a minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees C; Rajouri 0.0 deg C; Doda 3.1 deg; Kishtwar 2.2 deg C; Ramban town 2.7 deg while Udhampur a minimum temperature of 4.5 deg C on Tuesday.
Jammu and its plain areas continued to be under fog, but during the day sun shine was visible at most of the places. The visibility improved over the skies after 11 am.
The flight operation remained better today as compared to yesterday as only four flights arrived late. All the scheduled flights operated on Tuesday, an official at Jammu Airport said.
For the last two days, there has been some improvement in the train traffic as well with the moderate fog in the northern region.
The Kashmir region is currently in the midst of ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, a 40-day period of extreme cold, during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below the freezing point and chances of snowfall are the highest. The plains of the Valley have not received any snowfall so far this season.
