SRINAGAR Jan 30: The hills of North Kashmir today recorded heavy snowfall closing the passes that lead to Gurez and Tanghdar while plains of the Valley were lashed by rains bringing respite to people from intense cold weather conditions.
Around 2.5 feet snow had accumulated at Sadhna Pass connecting Kupwara with Tanghdar. “It is still snowing at Sadhna Pass and the traffic movement has been suspended on the road as a precautionary measure,” said a senior official.
Lolab in Kupwara also received a few inches snow this morning leading to slippery conditions on the roads in the area.
Around 3.6 feet snowfall was today recorded at Razdhan Pass connecting Bandipora with Gurez and the highway has been closed for the traffic. Around 3 feet snowfall was also recorded in Afarwat area of Gulmarg.
Around two feet of fresh snowfall was experienced at Pir Ki Gali and other places in South Kashmir. The fresh snowfall was recorded in Chandanwari in Pahalgam.
In the meantime, the snowfall in the hills and rains in the plains led to improvement in the night temperatures while the day temperatures dropped across Valley.
Srinagar recorded a low of 2. 2 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was 8.8 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Qazigund in South Kashmir settled at 0. 2 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was recorded at 11.2 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius while the day temperature settled at 10.2 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was 7.2 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was 2.2 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was 9.5 degrees Celsius.
Kargil town continued to remain the coldest recorded place in the State as the minimum temperature there settled at minus 15.0 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was recorded at 2.0 degrees Celsius.
Leh town settled at a low of minus 11.9 degrees Celsius while the day temperature was recorded at 5.6 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the MeT office has forecast light rain and snowfall at isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir for next 24 hours.
