SMVDU hosts national workshop on ‘POSH Act & UGC Regulations, 2015’

KATRA, May 3: Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), organized a one day national workshop on “PoSH Act and UGC (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment) Regulations, 2015”.
The Constitution of India provides the legal right to have a safe workplace and educational institution campus. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Work – place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act) and the University Grants Commission (Prevention, prohibition and redressal of sexual harassment of women employees and students in higher educational institutions) Regulations, 2015 provide clear guidance on this sensitive matter.
The objective of this one day event was to spread the awareness among the stakeholders of SMVDU in particular and higher educational institutions in general for preventing such criminal offences.
Jyoti Solaria, a PoSH Consultant, Corporate Trainer and Workplace Wellness Coach was the guest speaker. She focused on the aspect of ‘Awareness to Action’. She pointed out that unwelcoming sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, making sexually coloured remarks and other verbal and physical conduct of sexual nature at the workplace etc are the types of sexual harassments and are covered under PoSH Act.
Solaria also made the audience aware of ‘Quid pro quo’, ‘Hostile work environment’ and other related situations. She also highlighted the rights available to the complainant.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr Kakali Majumdar, Presiding Officer, ICC, SMVDU.
As part of the workshop, NCC cadets and NSS volunteers delivered thought- provoking skit, songs and poems centered around the themes of gender sensitivity, dignity, and safe campus environments.
SMVDU Registrar Ajay Kumar Sharma, faculty members, non-teaching staff and students of SMVDU and SMVD College of Nursing attended the workshop.
The organizing committee of the workshop comprised of Dr Kakali Majumdar, Rajesh Sharma, Ritu Sharma, members of the ICC; Dr Rajiv Kumar, the Coordinators of NSS Unit; Dr Varun Dutta from NCC Unit of SMVDU, Jaipal Singh Jamwal, staff associated with ICC and student volunteers of NSS and NCC. The one day workshop concluded with an awareness rally.
