JAMMU, Sept 27: The Department of Paediatrics, SMGS Hospital, GMC Jammu, organised a walkathon under the ISCALL Project in collaboration with CANKIDS, followed by an awareness session on Childhood Cancer, aimed at spreading awareness about early detection, timely treatment, and community involvement in the fight against childhood cancers.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of several individuals, including faculty members, registrars, postgraduate students, paramedical staff, nurses of the Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital and students of various Nursing institutes.
The walkathon was followed by an informative awareness program, where experts highlighted the importance of understanding childhood cancer and supporting affected families.
Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, graced the occasion as the chief guest and appreciated the collective efforts of the Pediatrics Department and partner organizations in creating awareness and providing care for pediatric cancer patients.
Speaking during the session, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra, Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics, discussed various aspects of childhood cancer and emphasized that childhood cancer is treatable if diagnosed early and managed appropriately. He urged the community and healthcare professionals to work together to ensure that no child suffers due to lack of awareness or resources.
He also acknowledged the contribution and continuous support of several NGOs, whose efforts have been instrumental in providing holistic care, including nutrition, financial aid, counselling services, awareness campaigns, and emotional support to children battling cancer and their families.
Mushaff Zaidi, State Coordinator, CANKIDS, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the vital role of CANKIDS in supporting childhood cancer patients through treatment assistance, counseling, and rehabilitation initiatives in more than 140 Govt hospitals countrywide including SMGS Hospital Jammu.
Prominent persons present on the occasion were Dr Ashu Jamwal, Dr Sunil Dutt Sharma, Dr Mohd Razaq, Dr Anuj Bhatti, Dr Ravi Parihar from Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital GMC Jammu and Neerja Sharma – Matron, SMGS Hospital.
The events were coordinated by Harpreet Kour, Dinakshi Sharma, Suruchi Sharma (Cankids) along with Ojasvi, Simran, and Adil.
