SRINAGAR, May 23: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has sealed a residential building that was repeatedly used for commercial purposes in the Suthra Shahi area of Karan Nagar.
As per details, the structure was initially sealed in December 2020 for being converted from residential to commercial use. However, it was later de-sealed in June 2023 on the condition that it would be used only for residential purpose.
In a sealing order issued in this regard, the SMC stated that the concerned ward officer found commercial activities still going on there.
“Accordingly vide No. SMC/W-22/728-29, dated 11.02.2025 served a notice wherein informed to use the structure solely for residential purpose; ward officer, vide No. SMC/W-22/738-39, dated 20.02.2025 has reported that the commercial activity is still going on in the said structure,” SMC stated.
Further, the SMC stated that the Enforcement Officer, West SMC, on 27.02.2025 recommended the re-sealing of the structure in question.
“The Ward Officer, dated 18.03.2025, has reported that during an on-site inspection, it was found that there is an office on the ground floor of the said building.”
The SMC stated that, based on these facts, a show-cause notice for sealing the structure was issued vide No. SMC/Enf/30153-59, dated 29.03.2025, asking the offender to explain within 7 days why the structure should not be sealed.
“The offender has submitted reply to the showcase sealing notice, which has been forwarded to Enforcement Officer West for examination.”
The SMC stated that the Enforcement Officer, West, on 23.04.2025 reported that during a spot inspection it was observed that the premises, approved for residential use only, “are being used for commercial activities, including additional dispensaries.”
The Enforcement Officer recommended that appropriate action be initiated for misuse of land use. Hence, the reply was found devoid of any merit and was accordingly rejected, the SMC noted.
“Now therefore, in view of the facts and circumstances referred to hereinabove, the structure/building in question is hereby sealed under J&K Municipal Corporation Act 2000 & J&K Unified Building Bye-Laws, 2021. The structure in question is put under the Superdari with the Station House Officer, Police Station Karan Nagar, and Ward Officer, Ward No. 22, SMC.”
