SRINAGAR, Feb 12: The J&K Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) today said that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) employees are facing a financial crisis as their salaries remain withheld.
In a statement issued here, EJAC General Secretary Sajad Ahmed Parray expressed deep concern over the financial distress faced by employees, including regular, contractual, daily wagers, consolidated, and other categories, whose salaries, he said, have been withheld for an extended period.
He highlighted that even employees-whether permanent, daily-rated workers, casual labourers, or consolidated staff-who have been deployed to the SMC from other departments under the 74th Amendment, such as PHE, R&B, UEED, Forest, and others, are also awaiting their salaries.
Parray emphasized that employees’ financial commitments, including loan repayments, medical treatments for elderly and ailing family members, children’s education, and other household necessities, are entirely dependent on their salaries.
“The delay in disbursing these rightful wages has led to severe hardships, pushing employees into an extremely challenging situation,” he said.
Parray urged the authorities to intervene immediately and ensure the pending salaries are released without further delay.
He reiterated that withholding salaries is a grave injustice to hardworking employees who dedicate their services to maintaining essential civic functions in Srinagar.
Parray also urged the Commissioner, SMC, Dr. Owais Ahmad, to release the pending salaries and wages for all employees.
