Smart city status for Jammu

Sir,
With the launch of Smart cities project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a project for which every city of this country will vie for. Each aspiring city wants to compete for selection as a smart city. The non inclusion of Jammu & Srinagar from J&K in the first list is a disappointment. This means that we have lost an opportunity to have a comprehensively developed city. In other words it would mean that we have lost the opportunity to have planned areas with greater housing opportunity  in walkable locality.
The congestion would reduce so would air pollution. This would give a boost to the local economy and ensure security.
Jammu city deseved the tag. This is not just because of a geographical location and history, but also because of it being the gateway to the large tourist inflow to J&K. The city is very well connected with the road, railways and air. The connectivity to rail and air is with almost all  major towns and cities of the country. The  city stays connected throughout the year with rest of the country. Importantly Jammu city serves as the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir State.
Keeping in view the above facts it would have been in the best interest of the public at large that the city was included in the first list of Smart cities. Let us hope and pray that we receive the tag in the very near future.
Yours etc…
S N Raina
