Srinagar, Oct 11: As part of its efforts to de-clutter the emergency section and improve efficiency, which has been a concern for some time, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, has opened a separate paediatric emergency block.
The move has provided much-needed relief to parents bringing their children to the hospital during emergencies, especially at night.
Currently, the block is adequately staffed with doctors and equipped with a few beds and other essential medical equipment. However, there are growing demands for expansion.
The pediatric emergency block is located directly in front of the hospital’s main emergency section, making it easy for attendants to find.
Visitors to the paediatric emergency have expressed their appreciation for the change, noting that it was previously challenging, particularly for children, in the main emergency area.
“It was much needed and has finally been done by the hospital authorities. It should have been done much earlier, as people living nearby would take their children to the Children’s Hospital during emergencies,” said Bilal Ahmad, an attendant.
Previously, doctors at the main emergency block of SKIMS attended to children of specific age groups, while infants under one year old had to be taken to a different ward, making it difficult for attendants. However, this issue has now been resolved.
“Children of all age groups are now being treated at the new emergency block. It was difficult before, but now that this has been addressed, the authorities should consider expanding the facility further and adding more doctors to ensure seamless care,” said another parent, Owais Ahmad.
It’s important to note that shortly after being appointed Director of SKIMS, Dr. Ashraf Ganie prioritized improving the emergency department, with a special focus on patient care.
Upon assuming office, he convened doctors and other stakeholders to plan focused measures to enhance the emergency section’s efficiency.
These measures included establishing a triage center, setting up an emergency lab, and relocating the paediatric emergency. According to officials, the creation of the triage center has reduced the workload and streamlined the triage process, ensuring priority care for patients in need.
It’s worth noting that lab tests at the SKIMS emergency used to be time-consuming, adding to patient frustration. However, this issue has been resolved with the introduction of a 24×7 emergency laboratory.
