Srinagar, June 30: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, has ordered the constitution of a Pharmacovigilance Committee tasked with monitoring Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and carrying out benefit-risk profiling of medicines, among other responsibilities.
“Sanction is… accorded to the reconstitution of Pharmacovigilance Committee at SKIMS…for detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other medicine/vaccine related problem, as per the guidelines of National Medical Commission (NMC) and National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS),” read the order.
The committee has been formed at both SKIMS, Soura, and SKIMS Medical College & Hospital, Bemina, and will be headed by the respective Medical Superintendents. The committee also has doctors from various other departments as members.

It will also identify ADRs occurring in patients admitted to the hospital and report the same to the appropriate authority, which is the National Pharmacovigilance Center.
The committee will monitor the benefit-risk profile of medicines and generate independent, evidence-based recommendations on the safety of medicines.
As per the objectives, the committee will also communicate findings with all key stakeholders and create a national centre of excellence at par with global drug safety monitoring standards.
It will also promote research based on Pharmacovigilance, undertake activities to strengthen the ongoing Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), and make efforts to minimize the chances of ADRs, thereby making drug therapy safer and more rational.
