SIT to probe assassination attempt on Farooq

JAMMU, Mar 14: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the assassination attempt on former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah in Jammu district earlier this week.
According to an order issued by IGP Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti, the incident took place on the night of March 11, 2026, at Royal Park Banquet Hall in the Greater Kailash locality here when Dr Farooq Abdullah, who is also the president of the National Conference, was allegedly attacked by an individual armed with a revolver while he (Dr Farooq Abdullah) was coming out of the marriage hall.

Police said the attempt was foiled due to the prompt action of security personnel deployed for the protection of the former Chief Minister, and no injuries were reported in the incident.
Following the attack, Police Station Gangyal registered a case FIR No. 29/2026 under section 109 of the BNS (attempt to murder) and section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
However, considering the “seriousness and sensitivity” of the case, the IGP Jammu ordered the constitution of a Special Investigation Team under the supervision of DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma.
Other members of the SIT include Sanjay Sharma, SO to DIG JSK Range; IH Rather, SP Headquarters Jammu; Arvind Kumar Sambyal, DySP RPHQ Jammu; Inspector Saroop Singh from RPHQ Jammu; Inspectors Paramjeet Singh and Shariq Majeed from District Jammu; and SHO Gangyal Inspector Sanjeev Chib.
The SIT has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and complete the probe within the prescribed statutory timeframe.
Pertinently, the 63-year-old accused individual in the case, Kamal Singh Jamwal from Purani Mandi area of the Jammu district, is currently on five-day police remand.
