SI escapes CBI trap after demanding bribe

JAMMU, July 4: A Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, who was on the radar of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for allegedly demanding bribe from a murder accused in RS Pura to remove his name from the charge-sheet, evaded the trap of the Central agency today.

His action was caught on the CCTV camera, where he could be seen running hurriedly after seeing the CBI sleuths.
As per sources, a woman, Pooja Devi wife of Kulbir Singh of Sidhar area in RS Pura was found dead under mysterious circumstances on April 28, 2025.
After the family members of the deceased woman levelled allegations of murder against her in-laws and the former Village Sarpanch, police investigated the matter thoroughly, and booked the in-laws of the woman, along with a Sarpanch, and some other people of the locality, sources said.
To remove the name of the Village Head from the charge-sheet, they said, Sub-Inspector Bashir Ahmed Malik, who is posted at Police Station RS Pura, and was made Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, allegedly demanded bribe from the relatives of the former.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, sources said, the family members of the accused Sarpanch approached CBI, followed by which, the Central agency laid a trap to arrest the suspected cop red-handed today, but before they could succeed, the SI got suspicious, and escaped the trap.
A senior police officer confirmed the entire incident, claiming efforts are being made to arrest the accused SI, who has been absconding since the incident.
Reportedly, CBI has registered a case FIR number 09/2025 under the relevant sections of the law against the absconding police officer and started further investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, locals staged a demonstration against the police in RS Pura area, and demanded immediate arrest of the police officer and stern punishment against him for misusing the law.
