Srinagar, Dec 20: Kashmir valley today observed shutdown to protest killing of a 24-year old woman during yesterday’s fierce gunfight in Batamurran village of Shopian district.
The woman was killed during clashes at Batamurran village of Wanpora hamlet of Shopian yesterday morning after two Jaish-e-Mohammad militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces.
The shops and commercial establishments were closed in Srinagar while traffic was off the roads. However, private vehicles were plying. Due to shutdown, there was partial attendance in banks and Government offices.
Authorities had imposed restrictions in five police station areas of old city as precautionary measure to prevent any violence. The restrictions were imposed in Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Khanyar police station areas. Hundreds of security forces personnel were deployed to enforce the restrictions. The authorities also imposed partial restrictions in Maisuma and Kralkhud police station areas.
Overall situation remained peaceful across Kashmir. However, there were clashes at Nawa Kadal area of the downtown this evening. Security forces fired teargas and pepper gas to disperse the protesters.
Shutdown was observed in South Kashmir districts. Authorities had beefed up security in Pulwama and Shopian districts to prevent any violence. The shutdown was also observed in other districts of the Valley.
Authorities, suspended rail services on Banihal-Baramulla track for security reasons.
