Srinagar, Oct 6: Normal life was paralysed in Kashmir for 90th day today due to shutdown that started with the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in July while police continued its crackdown against the protesters and arrested 77 of them.
Police and security forces were heavily deployed in three police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar – since early morning. Security forces were also heavily deployed in other areas of the Old City. The civilian movement was, however, allowed in these areas.
In Civil Lines and uptown area of the Srinagar, extra-ordinary movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but all the shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed. Besides, the vendors had set up their stalls at Batamaloo, Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Sonwar, Jehangir Chowk, Exhibition crossing and Jawahar Nagar. The forces were deployed at sensitive areas in strength.
In the evening, the markets across Srinagar opened after 5pm for second day. The city markets including Lal Chowk witnessed huge rush of people and there was traffic jam in civil lines areas at several places.
Shutdown was also observed in other parts of the Valley including in south and north Kashmir district. The train services remained disrupted for 90th consecutive day today. Pre-paid mobile services and mobile internet continued to remain blocked for security reasons.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the situation across the Valley remained normal today and there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere.
The statement said that with the improvement in overall situation there was a quantum increase in the day to day activities across the Valley. “Increased volume of private as well as public traffic was seen on roads across the Valley,” it said adding the shops were open and a large number of vendors were seen on the roads lanes and by lanes.
The statement said that in its continuous and sustained drive against the trouble mongers, police during last 24 hours arrested 77 such people involved in various offences of disturbing public order in different parts of the Valley.
