JAMMU, June 14: Authorities today demolished three shops allegedly constructed on encroached Government land by a known drug peddler in the Belicharana area of the Jammu district.
The action was carried out jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the civil administration as part of ‘Operation Clean-Up’.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Jammu South, Ajay Sharma, the shops belonged to Mohammad Sidiq alias Githa, who is facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Sidiq, a resident of Nikki Tawi’s Belicharana locality, had recently been booked in a narcotics case in the Gandhi Nagar area. Earlier, he was also named in a similar case registered at Bakshi Nagar Police Station.
During investigations, officials found that the shops were constructed using money earned through drug trafficking.
When the police approached the revenue department to initiate attachment proceedings under the NDPS Act, it was found that the shops were built on Government land.
Following this, a demolition operation was launched to retrieve the encroached state land.
SP Sharma, who led the drive, appreciated the cooperation of local residents and stressed the need for public support in the fight against drug abuse.
He said the drug menace has reached alarming levels and urged citizens to actively support efforts to eliminate it.
