‘Shocking, shameful’, Chidambaram on JNU attack; questions police role

NEW DELHI:  Terming the attack against students and teachers on the campus of Jawaharlal Nerhru University  ‘shocking and shameful’, senior Congress leader and former Home Minister P Chidambaram said the perpetrators of violence be identified and arrested within 24 hours and accountability on officers be fixed and action taken immediately.

“This incident is perhaps the most clinching evidence that we are rapidly descending into anarchy. It has taken place in the national capital in India’s foremost University under the watch of the central government, the Home Minister, the LG and the Commissioner of Police”, Mr Chidambaram said while addressing mediapersons at AICC headquarters.

“This is the gravest act of impunity that we have seen in recent times. Nothing can be more shocking and shameful”, he added.

The former Union Minister asked did not the Delhi Police have any intelligence on this ‘planned assault’ and added that “If they did not, their intelligence gathering was pathetic, if they did, it was an atrocious failure of responsibility. In either event,  the Commissioner of Police must be held accountable”.

Earlier in the day, AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged that the masked goons, who attacked students and faculty members on Sunday night belongs to BJP and RSS students wing ABVP.

Demanding judicial probe by a sitting judge into the entire episode, the Congress spokesperson also said, “the JNU administration was complicit in the attack by the goondas on the Campus. The goondas belong to the BJP and its frontal wing ABVP. Delhi police remained a mute spectator, standing outside and not intervened when goons were breaking ambulances outside the campus and beating the students and girls inside the campus. All these were happening with the tacit support of Home Minister Amit Shah”.
