MENDHAR, June 23: An extraordinary General Body meeting of the Shia Federation, a prominent non-political socio-religious welfare body of Jammu province, was held in Mendhar today.
The meeting was presided over by religious scholar Molana Syed Zakir Hussain Jafri and attended by representatives of 35 Anjumans, along with several independent observers.
The session primarily focused on approving amendments to the Federation’s constitution, which had been in place since 2007. These changes were unanimously passed by the General Body.
A major decision taken during the meeting was the formation of a three-month ad-hoc committee to manage the Federation’s affairs until fresh elections are conducted under the revised rules.
In a significant move, the General Body unanimously passed a vote of no confidence against the sitting President, Ashiq Hussain Khan.
The motion was initiated by 10 Anjumans and backed by all 35 present. Members alleged that Khan tried to hold onto his position through nomination rather than a democratic election, violating the organization’s constitution.
The meeting also resolved that Khan should immediately stop using the Federation’s name in any public or private capacity, including on media or social platforms, to prevent further division within the community.
To oversee the transition, Syed Nazir Hussain Shah was unanimously elected as Chairman of the ad-hoc committee. He will supervise day-to-day affairs and conduct the upcoming elections.
The meeting witnessed participation from Anjumans across Poonch, Mendhar, Surankote, Jammu, and other areas, with five Anjumans joining virtually.
A vote of thanks was presented by Syed Munir Hussain Shah, President of the host Anjuman, who reiterated that the steps taken were aimed at unity, transparency, and the welfare of the Shia community.
