JAMMU, Sept 10: Following the devastation caused by recent flash floods in Jammu North constituency, MLA Sham Lal Sharma undertook an extensive tour of the worst-affected areas in Ward No. 61 and Ward No. 67.
The visit aimed at closely assessing the damages, interacting with affected families, and ensuring prompt action by the administration for relief, rehabilitation, and flood mitigation.
In Ward 61, the MLA began his inspection at Tomal Mohalla Peer Baba, where nearly 80 families suffered significant crop and property damage. Sharma expressed deep concern over the hardships faced by the residents and directed the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of PHE Jal Shakti to submit a detailed proposal for extending water supply connections to the uncovered parts of the mohalla.
At Tomal locality, Sham Lal Sharma surveyed numerous damaged houses and identified critical issues with the nallah flowing through the area, labeled “from Kalka Nagar Borhi Tomal Udheywala.” Its irregular, zigzag alignment has been a root cause of frequent flooding affecting local residents. He instructed the Tehsildars of Jammu North and Jammu West to urgently carry out demarcation of water bodies, realignment of the nallah to a straight path, and identification of encroachments. Furthermore, installation of notice boards was mandated to inform and prevent further illegal use of flood plains.
During his visit to Laxmi Vihar, Sharma ordered the administration to expedite loss assessment for affected households and emphasized the role of sanitation in preventing waterborne diseases. He instructed the sanitation inspector to ensure thorough cleaning of the area, highlighting the importance of maintaining hygiene in flood-impacted zones.
Sham Lal Sharma also inspected the premises near Boys High School Udheywala, where the partial construction of a nearby nallah led to water submergence of the school building during the floods. He directed the concerned AEE of the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) department to immediately draft a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for timely completion of the nallah, ensuring protection of public infrastructure in the future.
In the adjoining Ward 67, the MLA visited Kalka Nagar and focused on the urgent task of cleaning the “Kuchha Nallah” and eliminating stagnant water accumulation on plots and vacant lands.
