Sham inaugurates filtration plant, irrigation channel

BARAMULLA, Sept 10: Carrying forward the process of upgrading the essential infrastructure in the rural areas, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma today inaugurated a filtration plant at Salam Deodar, Kreeri and modernization of Babul Canal at village Sheikhpora in Baramulla district.
MLA Sangrama, Syed Basharat Bukhari, Chief Engineer, PHE, A.M. Lanker, Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mir Javed Jaffer and engineers of both the departments also accompanied the Minister.
The 1.00 MGD filtration plant Salam Deodar which is sourced by the Regional Water Supply Scheme, Kreeri has been developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 crore, will benefit over 45000 souls of 40 villages/habitations. The plant utilizes latest technologies based on scientific treatment of raw water by way of sedimentation, coagulation, flocculation, filtration and chemical dosing round the clock. The water from the treatment plant will be directly distributed through a network of distribution system to all designated areas in the scheme. With this facility, the people of this remote area will be able to get potable drinking water.
The Babul Canal which is situated at village Sheikhpora in Baramulla district has been modernized/augmented with an estimated cost of Rs. 79.50 lakh. The development features comprise 90 meters RCC Channel across the Fresher Nallah of Babul Canal with escape channel, two regulatory gates and 6 piers and has the discharge capacity of 90 cusecs of water. This has improved the irrigation potential from 1700 hectares to 2065 hectares. With this modernization, the carrying capacity of the canal has increased to 150 cusecs and will provide assured irrigation to command area of 48 villages of Baramulla district.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that it is endeavour of the Government to provide best amenities to the people, especially in the rural and far-flung areas. He said 29 minor and major Water Supply Schemes and irrigation schemes are under progress in the area to further improve basic facilities.
He asked the people to maintain peace and tranquillity, essential for ensuring all-round development. He said present Government has a specific agenda to upgrade the essential services with special focus on road connectivity, drinking water, education and health. He sought whole hearted support of the people to carry forward the tempo of all round development.
Regarding the issues raised by the MLA, the Minister assured that all these would be examined on priority and addressed at the earliest. He also announced that a Two Room Tenement Inspection Hut will be constructed by the PHE in the area to facilitate the Government officers.
