RAMBAN, Nov 16: MLA Banihal Sajjad Shaheen today initiated an important fisheries development initiative by leading the stocking of genetically improved brown trout in the Mahoo–Khari River, laying the foundation for developing the Khari River into a dedicated trout fish culture hub.
Shaheen was accompanied by the Assistant Director Fisheries Amanaullah Khan, Tehsildar Khari Harveer Singh, officers of the Fisheries Department, and local party functionaries, who jointly supervised the stocking drive and assessed the River’s suitability for expanded trout culture activities.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaheen said that Khari River possesses exceptional cold-water conditions ideal for trout development and has the potential to emerge as one of the most productive trout belts in the region. He highlighted that such initiatives will help replenish fish populations, promote recreational angling, and boost eco-tourism, ultimately contributing to livelihood generation for local youth.
He further announced that similar stocking initiatives will be carried out in all cold-water streams of the Banihal–Gool belt, including Zaban, Thandichaan, Neel, Pogal, and other streams of Gool, in a phased manner to ensure comprehensive enhancement of trout populations across the region.
Lauding the Fisheries Department for its concerted efforts, including the rearing of improved trout strains developed from high-quality eyed ova and their systematic release in suitable streams throughout J&K, Shaheen reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to scientific fish culture, sustainable resource management, and the development of nature-linked tourism opportunities in the constituency.
He assured continued support for strengthening fisheries infrastructure and expanding cold-water trout culture initiatives in the area.
