SHILLONG, May 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi and requested to have the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate or (CUET-UG) centres in Meghalaya or else to defer the examination for this year till the infrastructure is ready.
Sangma’s request came a day after students from across the State, set to appear for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) have voiced disappointment over the allotment of exam centres outside the State.
Sangma also asked the Union Education Minister to direct the National Testing Agency (NTA) to review and reallocate CUET-UG, 2025 centres for Meghalaya students within the state.
“A large number of students who had opted for centres within Meghalaya-particularly in Shillong-have been allotted centres in distant locations such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Mizoram, Nagaland, and even Kolkata,” the Chief Minister informed Pradhan in his letter
“The allotment of examination centres for Meghalaya students outside the State has placed an undue burden on many students, especially those from financially constrained backgrounds, who are now compelled to bear significant travel and accommodation costs. In many cases, these costs are beyond their (students) means,” Sangma explained.
Moreover, the Chief Minister said the allotment of the centres has resulted distress has not only disrupted the academic preparation of these students but has also led to a growing apprehension that some may be forced to forgo the examination altogether.
He said this situation has emerged despite repeated appeals and past assurances regarding the availability of sufficient centres within the state.
Noting that the Meghalaya government has consistently extended full support to the NTA by identifying potential centres and offering all administrative cooperation, the Chief Minister also informed Pradhan that the State government have also constituted a State-Level Committee, along with District-Level Committees, to facilitate the smooth conduct of NTA examinations within the state.
