Service to Humanity

Vijay Bhatiani

Among the different religions practiced in this world, there are lots of differences. But there is one thing on which they all agree that is the virtue of service to humanity. A compassionate heart is a chief nursing source of the service to humanity. Lord Buddha said; “if you want to serve me, nurse the poor and sick ones”. This service is practiced at different platforms; at the individual, group, social, state, national or international level.
How and why it is beneficial to the mankind, for this one must understand the Karma Theory as explained by Lord Krishna in Bhagwat Gita. It states that there is a universal accounting system in which each individual has to experience the consequences of all his actions (Karmas), good actions, bring good results and bad actions inevitably result in suffering to the one who does them. The theory also states the consequences of the actions need not necessarily be experienced in present life, they are carried over into future lives.
The karmas are classified in three categories –
Sanchit Karmas; the store of karmic debts accumulated from previous births. The subconscious of a man is a warehouse of good and bad karmas.
Prabadha Karmas: That part of Sanchit Karmas which must be worked out in the present life. Because the law of Karma implies determinism in human activities, Prabadha is often translated as destiny.
Agami Karma: New Karma accumulated in present life time which is carried forward into future life. By doing service to humanity, one is creating a Agami Karmas that is creating reward Karmas for one’s future life. However, other religions who do not believe in the idea of rebirth promise, a berth in heaven or hell as a result of good or evil deeds.
An exchange between Sh Haidakhan Babaji and a devotee would further validate and explain the intricacies of Karma theory. Sh Haidakhan Babaji, along with the devotees were travelling in a car and were passing through a big hospital in Mumbai. The devotee told Sh Haidakhan Babaji that he had donated a room in the mentioned hospital. To further stress his point, he said his nameplate carved in stone is fixed in front of the room. Sh Haidakhan Babaji said, “You should not have put the stone plate with your name over there, by this action, the reward of this karma will not go through to your future birth, but will remain stuck to your name only. That is why we say in India if you give donation by right hand, your left hand should not know about it.
People make millions after their death, leave the whole amount for their kith and kin. Because of attachments, one does not like donating one’s wealth for the poor and the needy. Whereas by spending this money discreetly in the service of humanity by giving donations for a good cause without the involvement of ego, one carries forward the reward of the same to one’s future birth.
I will quote what Maharishi Raman has said to this effect, “You must love all and help all since only in this way, you can help yourself. When you seek to reduce the suffering of any fellow man or fellow creature, whether your efforts succeed or not, you are yourself evolving, spiritually, especially if such service is rendered disinteresting, not with the egoistic, feeling, “I am doing this” but in the spirit that God is making me the channel of this service, He is the doer and I am the instrument.” The truth is; all that one gives to others is giving to oneself only. Since everyone is one’s own Self, whoever does whatever to others is doing to himself only.” About Raman Maharshi, Sh Haidakhan Babaji said that he was the 12th reincarnation of Shringi Rishi who had performed yagna to beget children for King Dashrath leading to the birth of Lord Ram, Bharat, Laxman & Shatrughan.
Shree Baba Haidakhan Charitable and Research Hospital at Chiliyanaula is one such place where service to humanity is done sincerely. Here free treatment of eye and free cataract surgeries are done for the needy and poor of this region. By donating here, you are benefiting your own self.
