Srinagar, Feb 2: Separatist leaders today called for a shutdown on February 9 and 11 to commemorate the hanging anniversaries of executed Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and militant ideologue, Muhammad Maqbool Bhat.
Hardline Hurriyat faction chairman Syed Ali Geelani and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik in separate statements appealed the people to observe shutdown on February 9 and 11 and sought the mortal remains of the duo.
Geelani termed the return of mortal remains demand as “purely a human issue”. Both the separatists said the demand won’t be shunned by the people of Kashmir till it is accepted.
The JKLF chairman further announced holding of rallies in different parts of the world by his party and he himself would lead a protest March to Lal Chowk on February 10.
Maqbool Bhat, one of the founders of JKLF, was hanged to death in Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984 while Guru met the same fate over his role in 2001 Parliament attack on February 9, 2013. Both lie buried in Tihar jail.
