If more students are brought under the ambit of Science Scholarships Scheme of the J&K Council for Science & Technology, it will certainly help in inculcating scientific temper among the student community of the State. One feels quite dismayed rather dejected at the way science subjects are taught in the State educational institutions. There are numerous reasons why science has received a raw deal in these institutions. The science subjects are taught like history and other language subjects where more emphasis is laid on theory. The students are never exhorted to do science practicals in laboratories. The emphasis is laid on covering syllabus in any way.
The teacher community too is not much familiar with subjects. They are just happy with theoretical aspects of the subject and nothing beyond that. Those who have zeal for teaching with practicals fail to get necessary material from laboratories. It is necessary that school authorities create conditions quite necessary for teaching science effectively in schools by holding science festivals, debates and discussion on periodical basis in schools.
