JAMMU, Dec 8: The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) J&K, Divisional Office Jammu, through its Department of Curriculum Development and Studies of Academic Unit-II, organised a one-day orientation programme on “Gender Sensitization to Address Local Context-Specific Barriers to Female Access in Education.”
The programme brought together fifty Teachers and Masters across Jammu Division, aimed at strengthening teachers’ understanding of gender-related issues and empowering them to create inclusive, equitable learning environments across schools.
Amit Kumar Bhagat, Programme Coordinator, presented a brief concept note highlighting the objectives of the orientation.
In her inaugural address, Prof Sindhu Kapoor, Joint Director, SCERT J&K, highlighted gender sensitization as an essential pillar of a healthy school environment. She urged the participants to recognise the often-unnoticed forms of gender bias that surface in classrooms and school practices, and to adopt teaching methods that ensure every learner feels valued, respected, and empowered.
The technical sessions for the day were conducted by eminent resource persons, including Dr Sunita Devi, Assistant Professor, GDC Purmandal; Rubeena Yasmeen, Assistant Professor, GDC Akhnoor; Dr Sheetal Manhas, Member, Juvenile Justice Board, Mission Vatsalya (CPS), J&K UT and Navneet Gupta, Academic Officer, SCERT. The experts engaged the participants on foundational gender concepts, identification of gender bias in educational settings, strategies for responding to discrimination and exclusion, and ways to cultivate safe, respectful and learner-friendly classroom environments.
The smooth conduct of the programme was ensured under the supervision of Vinod Bhat, Head AU-II, and Parveen Akhter, Head, Department of Curriculum Development and Studies. The organising team included Vivek Jandial and Navneet Gupta as Technical Coordinators, Amit Sharma, Dr Sandarve, Ashok Kumar, Sushil Hitashi, Rukhsana Gulbadan, Arsh Kour, Poonam Sharma and Sushma Kumari. Meena Thakur moderated proceedings of the day.
During the valedictory session, certificates were distributed to all the participants. A formal vote of thanks was presented by Vinod Bhat, Associate Professor.
