JAMMU, Jan 18: All India Confederation of SC/ST/OBC Organisations, J&K today sat on a day-long hunger strike under the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar at Ambedkar Chowk, Railway Road here.
State president of the organization RK Kalotra while speaking on the occasion said that strike was aimed at pressuring the UT government to address what he described as “systematic denial of rights and administrative apathy.” He said Confederation has been regularly raising its voice for the restoration of reservation in promotions, which has been put on hold following the High Court verdict.
Kalsotra said that if the Parliament can change the Supreme Court’s decision in the Indra Sawhney case to stop reservation in promotions, after 1997 through 77th Constitutional amendment, then why can’t the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly change the Jammu and Kashmir High Court’s decision on reservation in promotions? We observed hunger strike to press and ask the Jammu and Kashmir Government to bring a bill in the upcoming Assembly Session to nullify the High Court’s decision on reservation in promotion and restore the reservation in promotion from the date it was stopped that is Oct.2015 of the reserved class employees.
He stated that Union Govt enacted constitutional amendments like 81st, 82nd and 85th to override the ill affects of reservations and exhorted the UT Govt to bring legislation to provide reservation to reserved classes for ensuring their share in governance of affairs of the state.
Confederation leader appealed the Government to address all pending issues of SC, ST, OBC communities.
Those who spoke on the occasion included- Ramesh Sarmal, BL Bhardwaj, Adv Ch Anwar, Dina Nath, Vicky Dogra, Har Dutt, Shashi Syal, Suresh Bangotra, Chandu Ram, Tarsem Lakhotra, Chuni Lal and many others.
