JAMMU, Dec 12: Newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma today raised serious concern over the increasing climatic challenges in Jammu and Kashmir during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha.
He urged the Central Government to provide immediate financial and technical assistance to help the Union Territory deal effectively with natural disasters.
Sharma said Jammu and Kashmir is facing alarming changes in weather patterns, including rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and frequent extreme events like cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides.
Referring to the recent flash flood in the Chashoti area of Paddar in Kishtwar district, which caused loss of life and property, he called for scientific and preventive steps to avoid such incidents in future.
He noted that while schemes under the National Action Plan on Climate Change and the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change are important, J&K needs focused attention and sustained Central support to strengthen climate resilience.
He demanded upgradation of climate-monitoring and early-warning systems through Doppler radar, satellite-based tracking, and ground-sensor networks across vulnerable regions.
Sharma also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh for their leadership and timely response during past natural calamities.
He said their proactive approach has ensured effective relief and rehabilitation for the people of J&K.
Reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of the region, Sharma said building climate resilience is vital for protecting lives, livelihoods, and sustainable development.
He appealed to the Centre to extend all necessary support so that J&K can face future climatic challenges with greater preparedness.
