JAMMU, Jan 20: Orthopaedic Unit of Government Hospital Sarwal has conducted arthroscopic (button hole) joint surgeries.
They have performed many cases of arthroscopic ACL ( Anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery using quadruple hamstrings tendon autograft in persons having ACL tear with instability of knee joint. They have also performed arthroscopic meniscus surgeries, arthroscopic removal of loose body from joints and arthroscopic joint debridement and micro fracturing in case of osteoarthritis in middle aged patients.
Many of these ligament surgeries have been performed on young sport persons. Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Nipun Kalsotra who conducted the surgeries, has done fellowship in arthroscopy, sport injuries and Joint replacement surgery from Germany.
The advantage over traditional open surgery is that the joint does not have to be opened up fully. This reduces recovery time and increase the rate of success due to less trauma to the connective tissue.
Medical superintendent Dr Harbaksh Singh informed that Government Hospital Sarwal has also started these specialised arthroscopic ligament reconstruction surgeries under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) SEHAT scheme free of cost. For these kind of surgeires patient has to spend lacs of rupees in private hospitals out of the State. Orthopaedic unit is also conducting specialised sport injuries OPD every Wednesday.
Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction of 21 years old young sports person was done under PMJAY scheme free of cost. Another case of hip replacement of a 70 years old female was done under PMJAY scheme and both the patients were made to walk and discharge few days after surgery.
