JAMMU, Oct 11: District Congress Committee (DCC), Jammu Rural, sought immediate rollback of toll tax being levied on vehicles on the newly installed Jammu- Sarore Toll Plaza, on Jammu-Pathankot Highway, terming the move as extra burden on the public.
In a press statement issued here on Friday, Hari Singh Chib, president DCC Jammu Rural urged the Governor, Satya Pal Malik to suspend the tax levied at the Sarore Toll Plaza. He said that such huge taxation in the form of multiple toll plazas was simply unaffordable for the common masses and particularly those who had to commute on regular basis between Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Lakhanpur.
Chib asserted that this is the extra burden on the innocent people of Jammu region as well on the tourists who come in the State for pilgrimage to Shri Vaishno Devi and Shri Amarnath Ji shrines. He asserted that Highway between Samba and Jammu is totally dense traffic area and due to the huge traffic volume, it is also the accidental and jam prone area. The National Highway authorities has not taken the preventive steps regarding this concern as it has not installed the equipments which may help to enforce the traffic rules and the violators be punished, he said.
He said that the people who were travelling on the highway are facing huge problems. Due to mismanagement long queues of vehicles were seen on the Toll Plaza. It is a total traffic mess and a long jam of about 4-5 kms was witnessed today. He said that this toll plaza was installed in a hurry. Expressing dismay over the decision, DCC president termed it was unjust and unfair to levy taxes on people.
