JAMMU, May 28: ‘The-Sara’, a non-profit organization today organized an awareness programme on menstrual hygiene at Government Middle School, Ismailpur in Jammu.
The programme was organized in connection Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD), which is being celebrated throughout the world today with the theme “Empowering women and girls through good Menstrual Hygiene”.
Along with girl students of the school, a large number of young women from the village attended the programme. Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. It was initiated by the German-based non-profit organization WASH United in 2014 and aims to benefit women and girls worldwide.
During the programme, Dr Raminder Jit Singh, Director ‘The – Sara’ underlined the importance of “girls knowing how to manage their personal hygiene in particular during their periods to avoid infections.” He said menstruation only becomes a problem when people refuse to regard it as a normal function of the female human body: when people stigmatize it, create myths about it, treat it as an illness, and put restrictions on females during their reproductive years.
Anisha Dhar, Counselor of ‘The – Sara’ explained on how menstruation occurs in a girl body. She also advised girls to eat a well-balanced diet, to promote healthy growth and good concentration at all times.
On the occasion, sanitary pads were also distributed among the women and girl students. Initiative was supported by Donatekart & Wonder Wings. Manpreet Kour, member ‘The – Sara’ conducted the proceedings of the programme.
