SAOLJ celebrates annual day

JAMMU, Jan 19: Students Association of Ladakh Jammu (SAOLJ) celebrated its annual day by organizing an impressive function at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium in Jammu, here today.
On the occasion, students presented various colourful items highlighting rich Ladakhi culture and mesmerized the audience. Attired in traditional Ladakhi dresses, they presented folk dance and songs of Ladakh region.
Nawang Rigzin Jora, the Minister for Urban Development and Local Bodies, was chief guest on the occasion while Kachu Ahmed Ali Khan, Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) Ladakh, was the guest of honour.
Highlighting some demands of Ladakhi students, president of SAOLJ, Syed Mukhtar Shah, read out a memorandum seeking increase in the number of seats for Ladakhi students in Jammu University as well as Kashmir University, timely release of scholarship for the Ladakhi students and opening of an IT college, Public Service Commission centre and a Government B Ed college in Ladakh. In the memorandum, the Government was also urged to start early functioning of proposed Ladakh University.
Nawang Rigzin Jora, in his address, assured positive consideration to all the demands, highlighted by SAOLJ and said that he would personally look into these issue. He lauded Students Association of Ladakh Jammu for preserving their traditional culture.
The Minister said that the Government was committed for overall development of Ladakh region by providing all the basic facilities and opening the institutions of higher learning there.
Kachu Ahmed Ali Khan also spoke on the occasion and appreciated the Students’ Association of Ladakh Jammu for its positive activities. He assured all possible help to SAOLJ for highlighting the issues of Ladakhi students.
On the occasion, Jora awarded IAS officer Owaisa Iqbal of Ladakh for her achievements.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Hasina Bano, vice-president of SAOLJ, threw light on various activities of the Students Association, which has been organizing the annual day function in Jammu for the last several years.
The vote of thanks was presented by Mohd Ibrahim, treasurer SAOLJ.
